Parade lap: Jarno Trullis Prost stops with an engine failure on the warm-up lap.
Lap 1: At the start Michael Schumacher takes the lead with Eddie Irvine behind him, followed by David Coulthard, Mika Hakkinen and Rubens Barrichello. Further back there is an incident as Damon Hill and Giancarlo Fisichella tangle. Hill retires and Fisichella pits for repairs. Further around the lap Ricardo Zonta and Pedro Diniz both have spins on their own. At the end of the lap Michael Schumacher has a lead of 1.7secs.
Lap 2: Schumacher sets the fastest lap and builds his lead up to 3.1ses by the end of the lap. Behind him Irvine keeps the two McLarens behind him and the two Stewarts run fifth and sixth with Rubens Barrichello ahead of Johnny Herbert.
Lap 3: Alessandro Zanardi pits for repairs having been involved in the early action.
Lap 4: Schumacher slows down and allows Irvine to take the lead.
Lap 5: Irvine sets the fastest lap but Coulthard forces his way past Schumacher to get into second place. Further back Pedro Diniz passes Olivier Panis and Ricardo Zonta passes Pedro de la Rosa. Luca Badoer has a spin in his Minardi.
Lap 6: Jean Alesi passes both Jacques Villeneuve and Ralf Schumacher on the same lap to grab eighth place. Panis retires with an engine problem.
Lap 7: David Coulthard chases after Eddie Irvine while further back Zonta suffers an engine failure and spins out. Tora Takagi also slows and drives slowly round to the pits to retire.
Lap 8: While Coulthard puts pressure on Irvine, Ralf Schumacher spins out of ninth place.
Lap 10: Diniz passes Marc Gene to take 11th place. Two laps later Badoer pits.
Lap 14: Michael Schumacher suddenly begins to charge, leaving Hakkinen behind and closing up on Coulthard and Irvine.
Lap 15: Coulthard pulls off with an engine problem, leaving the Ferraris running 1-2. This elevates Alexander Wurz to sixth place. Further back Badoer pits again and retires.
Lap 16: Hakkinen closes on Schumacher but the German slows and so Irvine is able to pull away rapidly. By lap 20 the gap has gone from 4.5secs to 9.5secs as Hakkinen is unable to pass the Ferrari.
Lap 17: Diniz has a spin but keeps going without losing a place.
Lap 18: Alesi forces Wurz into an error and gets into sixth place.
Lap 19: Barrichello is the first driver to pit. He leaves Herbert in fourth place with Alesi fifth and Wurz sixth.
Lap 20: Wurz pits and on the following lap Alesi also stops. This puts Villeneuve into the top six.
Lap 22: Schumacher suddenly speeds up, closing the gap on Irvine and leaving Hakkinen behind. Further back down the field Villeneuve and Diniz call into the pits.
Lap 25: Irvine pits and rejoins in fourth place behind Schumacher, Hakkinen and Herbert. There is then a gap back to Barrichello who is under pressure from Frentzen. There is then another gap back to Alesi and Wurz.
Lap 27: Hakkinen pits, leaving Herbert to run in second place behind Schumacher.
Lap 28: Schumacher and Herbert pit. This leaves Irvine in the lead again. Schumacher is second with Hakkinen right on his tail again.
Lap 30: Frentzen is the last of the frontrunners to stop. He drops from sixth to 10th.
Lap 38: The order is unchanged but Irvine has pulled out a lead of 19secs over Schumacher. The German has again held up Hakkinen, giving Irvine an extra 13secs in 10 laps. Wurz and Villeneuve pit for the second time. Almost immediately Villeneuve has a big spin but is able to rejoin.
Lap 39: Barrichello and Diniz both stop for a second time. Rubens rejoins in sixth place, Diniz in ninth.
Lap 41: Irvine pits for a second time. He rejoins behind Schumacher and Hakkinen. Herbert is fourth with Barrichello moving back up to fifth when Alesi pits. The Sauber drops to seventh behind Frentzen.
Lap 45: Diniz spins out of the race.
Lap 47: Hakkinen comes in for his second planned pit stop. He rejoins in fourth place behind Herbert.
Lap 49: Villeneuve pulls off and retires.
Lap 53: Schumacher slows and lets Irvine take the lead.
Lap 54: Herbert makes a mistake and Hakkinen is able to get ahead into third place.
Lap 56: Irvine and Schumacher finish 1-2 for Ferrari. Irvine takes the lead in the World Championship and Ferrari gets ahead of McLaren in the Constructors title race. Hakkinen is third, Herbert fourth with Barrichello fifth and Frentzen sixth. Alesi finishes seventh.
