* Lap 1: At the start Rubens Barrichello takes the lead with Heinz-Harald Frentzen, David Coulthard and Mika Hakkinen chasing. Jenson Button holds on to his fifth place while Jacques Villeneuve makes another great start to take sixth place from 10th on the grid. Michael Schumacher does not do well, dropping from fifth on the grid to seventh, just ahead of his brother Ralf, who also makes a poor start. Ralf forces his way past Michael to grab seventh.
* Lap 2: Ralf Schumacher overtakes Villeneuve at Stowe. Michael Schumacher finds himself trapped behind Villeneuve and the pair begin to drop away from the leading group. Further back Mika Salo passes Jean Alesi for 13th position. Pedro Diniz has an incident and drops from 16th to 19th.
* Lap 3: The leading group are running nose-to-tail while Villeneuve, Michael Schumacher and Jos Verstappen make up the chasing group. There is then a small gap to Jarno Trulli's Jordan.
* Lap 5: The pattern at the front is established with the top six running together, while Villeneuve, M Schumacher and Verstappen drop away. Further back Alexander Wurz overtakes Ricardo Zonta for 15th position.
* Lap 14: The order is unchanged but Villeneuve and Schumacher are over 20 seconds behind the leading group. Further back Wurz, stuck behind Alesi, pits early trying to get a clear track.
* Lap 15: Salo also decides to pit early and drops to the tail of the field.
* Lap 18: Fisichella pits early having been stuck behind Trulli.
* Lap 20: Verstappen retires from ninth place with hydraulic problems.
* Lap 24: Frentzen and Ralf Schumacher both pit. Heinz-Harald rejoins in seventh position and Schumacher in eighth.
* Lap 25: Button pits but his stop is a second slower than his team mates and so he drops to eighth place behind Ralf Schumacher.
* Lap 28: As the main runners in the midfield pit, de la Rosa retires with a hydraulic problem.
* Lap 30: Barrichello, Coulthard and Hakkinen are running together. At Stowe Corner Coulthard overtakes Barrichello with a brave move on the outside of the Ferrari.
* Lap 31: As Coulthard begins to build a lead, Hakkinen pits, rejoining in eighth position. This elevates Villeneuve and Michael Schumacher to third and fourth places.
* Lap 33: Coulthard pits, leaving Barrichello in the lead. Villeneuve also stops, allowing Schumacher to run second. Coulthard rejoins in fourth and Villeneuve drops to ninth.
* Lap 35: Barrichello spins because of a hydraulic problem. He pits but retires because of a clutch failure.
* Lap 36: Michael Schumacher sets the fastest lap of the race as he tries to make up for lost time.
* Lap 37: Seventh-placed Trulli pits and slips to ninth position. Zonta spins off.
* Lap 38: Michael Schumacher stops, which allows Frentzen to take the lead with Coulthard second and Ralf Schumacher and Button both ahead of Hakkinen. Michael Schumacher rejoins in sixth.
* Lap 42: Frentzen pits for the second time and drops to sixth place, allowing Coulthard to take the lead with Ralf Schumacher second and Button third. Then comes Hakkinen.
* Lap 46: Button stops and drops to sixth position.
* Lap 47: Ralf Schumacher stops and drops to fifth. This enables Hakkinen to move to second place with M Schumacher third. The Ferrari driver is unable to keep up with the two McLarens. Frentzen is fourth with the two Williams-BMWs in fifth and sixth.
* Lap 51: As Hakkinen closes up on Coulthard (who has a small problem with his gearbox) Frentzen runs into trouble and slips behind R Schumacher.
* Lap 52: Frentzen falls behind Button.
* Lap 54: Frentzen pits and retires with a mechanical problem.
* Lap 56: As Hakkinen closes on Coulthard, Villeneuve retires with a hydraulic problem. This allows Trulli to overtake to take sixth place.
* Lap 60: Coulthard crosses the line just ahead of Hakkinen to win his second consecutive British Grand Prix. Michael Schumacher is third with his brother Ralf fourth. Button finishes a popular fifth with Trulli taking the final point for Eddie Jordan.
