* Lap 1: It is dry at the start but the clouds are threatening. David Coulthard makes a poor start but Mika Hakkinen gets away quickly and takes the lead with Michael Schumacher second, the two cars just touching at the first corner. Coulthard takes third and Rubens Barrichello fourth. Jacques Villeneuve makes another remarkable start to grab fifth place from ninth on the grid. Further back Jarno Trulli and Giancarlo Fisichella collide. Trulli damages the left rear of his car. He goes off at the first corner and retires later on the lap. Heinz-Harald Frentzen is also pushed off at the first corner. At the end of the lap Hakkinen is half a second ahead of Schumacher with Coulthard third. Villeneuve is fifth with Fisichella sixth.
* Lap 2: Schumacher sets the fastest lap but remains behind Hakkinen. Further back down the order Pedro de la Rosa passes Jos Verstappen for ninth place, while Jean Alesi passes Jenson Button for 13th.
* Lap 3: Schumacher sets another fastest lap but further back Frentzen's race ends with a blown engine. At the back of the grid there is a big switch around as Marc Gene passes both Saubers to climb from 17th to 14th.
* Lap 4: Fisichella overtakes Ralf Schumacher to grab sixth place. Behind them de la Rosa overtakes Eddie Irvine to grab eighth.
* Lap 6: Villeneuve is under pressure from Fisichella while behind them de la Rosa passes Ralf Schumacher for seventh position.
* Lap 7: The leaders trade fastest laps and continue to pull away from Coulthard and Barrichello. There is then a big gap back to Villeneuve and Fisichella.
* Lap 9: Villeneuve makes a mistake at the chicane and then drops behind Fisichella.
* Lap 11: Michael Schumacher overtakes Hakkinen as they go into the chicane and begins to pull away.
* Lap 12: The rain starts and Barrichello passes Coulthard for third place. Further back Eddie Irvine overtakes R Schumacher for eighth. Verstappen spins and falls back. Alesi passes Alexander Wurz for 10th place. Johnny Herbert is the first to pit for wet tyres.
* Lap 13: Verstappen pits and is followed into the pits by Mika Salo and Marc Gene, who damages his front wing in a spin.
* Lap 14: Coulthard stops and is followed into the pits by de la Rosa and Irvine. Pedro Diniz has a spin and pits.
* Lap 15: M Schumacher and Hakkinen both stop and are followed into the pits by Fisichella, Villeneuve and Wurz. When Schumacher rejoins he battles for the lead with Coulthard but then pulls away quickly.
* Lap 16: The leader Barrichello stops and second-placed R Schumacher follows him into the pits. This puts M Schumacher back into the lead. Button is briefly a frontrunner but is unable to stop as the Williams pit is busy with R Schumacher and he loses a lot of ground as a result.
* Lap 17: Schumacher leads with Coulthard second and Hakkinen third. There is then a gap back to de la Rosa, Fisichella and Irvine. Button pits and drops back to 15th. Barrichello is ninth.
* Lap 19: Fisichella passes de la Rosa to take fourth place.
* Lap 21: Hakkinen passes Coulthard to take second place and chases after M Schumacher but the Ferrari driver is nearly 15 seconds ahead. Barrichello passes Verstappen to take seventh position.
* Lap 22: Barrichello passes Irvine for sixth place.
* Lap 23: Barrichello overtakes de la Rosa and moves into fifth position.
* Lap 25: R Schumacher passes Herbert for ninth place.
* Lap 28: Mika Salo spins off.
* Lap 30: Verstappen and Irvine collide at the first corner. R Schumacher goes off avoiding the crash. Irvine rejoins but his rear wing is damaged. It falls off further around the lap and he spins off. Verstappen's car also spins off into a barrier.
* Lap 32: Barrichello catches and overtakes Fisichella to take fourth place.
* Lap 33: Barrichello pits and drops back to sixth position.
* Lap 35: M Schumacher stops and Hakkinen goes ahead.
* Lap 39: Fisichella pits from fourth place and drops back to sixth.
* Lap 45: Hakkinen and Coulthard both pit for a second time. Michael Schumacher takes the lead again. Coulthard is back in fifth. Further back a big battle develops for eighth place between Herbert, Button and Wurz.
* Lap 46: Villeneuve pits and retires with an engine failure.
* Lap 48: De la Rosa pits and drops from third place to sixth. this puts Barrichello back to third.
* Lap 49: Button challenges Herbert at the chicane and hits the back of the Jaguar. The Williams driver damages the nose of his car both keep going.
* Lap 51: Barrichello pit again and drops behind Coulthard.
* Lap 61: As the leaders go through the midfield the order is shuffled with Button being pushed back behind Wurz.
* Lap 62: Wurz challenges Herbert at the final corner and the cars collide. Both retire. Button moves up to seventh
* Lap 64: As Schumacher and Hakkinen weave through traffic the gap comes down dramatically. Behind them Coulthard and Barrichello battle for third. Fisichella is a lonely fifth with de la Rosa sixth. Button retires with a mechanical problem.
* Lap 67: Schumacher wins with Hakkinen second. Coulthard and Barrichello are a lap behind in third and fourth places.
