World champion Michael Schumacher claimed his 68th victory here in Montreal this afternoon after snatching the lead from brother Ralf after his first and faster pit stop. The win also put him into the lead of the drivers championship for the first time this season.
The Ferrari driver, who started the race in third place, passed Juan Pablo Montoya after the Williams driver spun and then took the lead from brother Ralf. Ralf finished in second place ahead of his teammate Juan Pablo Montoya with Fernando Alonso crossing the line close to the Williams gearbox for fourth place.
Rubens Barrichello had to pit at the end of the first lap in his Ferrari to repair a broken front wing while Montoya, the winner in Monaco two weeks ago, spun and slipped from second place to fifth. The Colombian charged to make a recovery but was unable to get past the two Schumacher brothers that were under two seconds ahead of him at the end of the race.
McLaren driver Kimi Raikkonen, who crashed out in Saturday's qualifying, started from the pits in his McLaren as did Jordan's Ralph Firman. Raikkonen looked on course for a goo. Thankfully it was right before the entrance to pit lane, but it threw his race strategy out of wack and he finally finished in sixth place, behind Barrichello.
It was another Canadian Grand Prix to forget for Jacques Villeneuve whose BAR had to retire ending any hope he had of emulating his father Gilles who won here 25 years ago. Teammate Jenson Button also retired. Just ten runners were left in the race at the end of the event, with Olivier Panis getting his first point for Toyota and Mark Webber also securing two more points for jaguar with a seventh place.
